Swim Lessons 2026 - Session I: June 22-July 3 - Session I - Level 1: 8:00am-8:30am Swim lessons will once again be offered by the Leominster Recreation Department at the State Pool at 111 Viscoloid Ave. Certified Water Safety Instructors will provide these classes. Group lessons are thirty minutes in length. Learn to Swim Class descriptions are given below. Classes will be held Monday – Friday for two weeks and there will be four different sessions to choose from. See dates and times below. “Learn-to-Swim” teaches people to swim and to be safe in and around the water.Private Lessons are also available and are thirty minutes in length for the same two week period.Session I: June 22 - July 3Session II: July 6- July 17Session III: July 20 - July 31Session IV: August 3 - August 14 Level 1 – Introduction to Water Skills Objective: To help students feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely.Requirements: None. This is the class for those who are brand new or intimidated by the water. Skills Covered: Swimmers learn basics of swimming bobbing, going under water, supported front and back floating, supported rolling over from front to back and back to front, supported gliding , supported flutter kick, supported front crawl arms and jumping in.Level 2 – Fundamental Aquatic Skills Objective: To give students success with fundamental skills. Requirements: Swimmers should already be able to float on front and back (with assistance) and put their head under water.Skills Covered: Swimmers will work on independent front and back floating , independent rolling over from front to back and back to front, independent front and back glides, front crawl arms and kicks, back crawl arms and kicks, retrieving underwater objects, and jumping into water over their head.Level 3 – Stroke DevelopmentObjective: To build on skills in Level 2 through additional guided practiceRequirements: Swimmers should already be comfortable swimming front stroke and swimming on their back. Skills Covered: Swimmers will work on gliding, freestyle with side breathing, backstroke, breast stroke and dolphin kicks, retrieving objects in deeper water, treading water, jumping into deep water and compact dives. Level 4 – Stroke Improvement Objective: To develop confidence in the strokes learned thus far and to improve other aquatic skills by increasing endurance through swimming greater distances.Requirements: Swimmers should already be able to swim front and back crawl for 25 yards.Skills Covered: Swimmers will work on rotary breathing, freestyle, backstroke, elementary backstroke, scissors kick and sidestroke, whip kick and breaststroke, intro to turning at wall, treading water with modified scissors, and diving in kneeling position.Level 5 – Stroke Refinement Objective: Coordination and refinement of strokesRequirements: Swimmers should already be able to swim freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke 25 yards, scissors kick, treading water, and dive.Skills Covered: Swimmers will work on alternate breathing, stride jump, refinement of freestyle, backstroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, breaststroke, dolphin kick and butterfly, open turn on front and back, feet-first surface dive, and treading water.Level 6 – Swimming & Skill Proficiency Objective: Refine strokes so students swim them with more ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances.Requirements: Swimmers should already be able to swim front and back crawl 50 yds, elementary backstroke 25 yards, breaststroke 25 yards, butterfly 25 yards, sidestroke 10 yards, tread water for 3 minutes, and dive.Skills Covered: Swimmers will work on all six strokes, front and back crawl flip turn, breaststroke turn, breaststroke speed turn and pullout, butterfly turn, sidestroke turn, tread water for five minutes, and basic water rescueAnyone who needs special accommodations, please contact the pool at 978-537-8268 or prior to pool opening contact the Recreation Office via email: recdept@leominster-ma.gov.Please note: Not all pools are deep enough to teach all of the diving segments of all levels – program modifications may be required to meet safety guidelines.
